This is my grandmother\'s old recipe, and according to many in my family, it’s the BEST APPLE PIE YOU WILL EVER TASTE. I know the sour cream in the recipe seems odd, but we’re German and everything has sour cream in it. (Unless it is pickled or fried … and still sometimes even if it is fried.)
Ingredients:
1/2 Teaspoon Sugar
3 Tablespoons Butter or margarine
1/4 Teaspoon Nutmeg
1/8 Teaspoon Salt to taste
1 Egg beaten, for glaze
1/2 Cup Water (Ice)
1/2 Cup Lard
1/4 Teaspoon Cinnamon Ground
2 Cups Flour unsifted
4 Cups Apples canned (recommend White House brand)
3. Cut into the lard with two knives or a pastry cutter.
4. The mixture should be smooth and crumbly. Slowly work in the ice water and knead the dough until smooth.
5. Roll the dough into a bowl and dust with flour.
6. Cover it with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour.
7. Roll out half the dough and use it to line a 9 in.
8. pie pan. Brush the inside of this crust with beaten egg.
9. Prepare the filling. Combine the apples with the spices.
10. Pour the apples into the crust and top with the butter and sugar.
11. Roll out the remaining dough and place it on top of the pie.
12. Prick the top crust with a fork and brush it with the remaining beaten egg.
13. Bake the pie in a preheated oven for 1 hour, or until well browned.
