2. De-stem each tomato and cut into slices about 2 inches thick.
3. Place the tomato slices on a broiler pan as you work.
4. In a small mixing bowl, blend together the sugar, basil, salt, and pepper.
5. Sprinkle a bit of the mixture on top of each tomato slice, then slip the pan under a hot broiler for about 2 minutes.
6. Meanwhile, add the bread crumbs to the melted butter and toss lightly with a fork to coat.
7. Add the blue cheese to the mixture and toss again.
8. Spoon the mixture on top of the tomato slices and broil for just a minute or so, until the bread crumbs are lightly browned.
